Stratford-upon-Avon is a town in South Warwickshire and is 23 miles from Birmingham Airport, this journey should take about half an hour in normal traffic conditions. Situated on the banks of the river Avon and between Warwick and Worcester the town has a populaton of 111484 according the the 2001 Census.
Surrounding the town are the counties of Oxfordshire, Worcestershire, Gloucestershire and the Cotswolds. There is much to do in Stratford upon Avon which is the birthplace of William Shakespeare. It is an Old market town with over 800 years of history having many well preserved houses from its interesting past. Called 'Shakespeare Country' there are many attractions and houses of the town that are associated with him and his life that people from all over the world go to visit. Attractions include the Royal Shakespeare Theatre on the bank of the river,five houses in the town associated with him and his family and the Holy Trinity Church in the old town where he was buried.
There are open top bus tours, walking tours and boat trips on the River Avon to see the historic houses, parks and surroundings. There are a number of very popular tourist attractions such as The Courtyard Theatre, Spookey Ghost tour, Haunted Museum, Cox's Yard, Civic Hall or the parks and gardens on the banks of the river. Visit the Butterfly Farm, the largest in Britain or sample a local walk visiting one of the many pubs along the way. Along with the country pubs and inns there are tea shops and a good choice of restaurants.
The town is excellent for shopping, whether it is for gifts, Antiques, Jewellery or Books there is plenty of choice. With a weekly Market and Farmers Markets often held selling local produce. Outside Stratford are other historic places to visit such as Henley In Arden, Compton Verney, Kenilworth Castle, Warwick Castle, Ragley Hall, Cotswold Wildlife park and gardens.
